"Mutiny on the Bounty"

The illfated HMS Bounty, ship of the infamous Captain William Bligh. As a young man, Bligh sailed with Captain James Cook on his third voyage aboard HMS Resolution to Alaska and then Hawaii. He passed his lieutenants exam at the age of 21 and served as Ships Master while under Cook, in charge of navigation and charting the coastline. With only a sounding lead line, a sextant, compass, and the limited records of Russian explorer Vitus Bering, he successfully navigated and charted the treacherous waters of Alaska. On the voyage he avoided and named Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, something Captain Hazelwood and his crew aboard the Exon Valdez were unable to do with modern sonar, and GPS.

After Cook's death on Hawaii and a trip back to Alaska he returned to England where in 1787 he was given command of the small armed vessel HMS Bounty. His mission was to sail to Tahiti and gather breadfruit plants to deliver to the Carribean. After Leaving Tahiti, Masters Mate, Fletcher Christian led a group of mutineers who took control of the ship and set Bligh and a small party of loyal sailors adrift in the ships launch. On meager rations, Bligh was able to successfully guide the small boat and crew a distance of 3,618 miles to Timor. Along the way, despite a harrowing 1:00am encounter, he successfully navigated and charted parts of the Great Barrier reef off Australia. No doubt moved by his experience, the Captain charted and named a second Bligh Reef

The Bounty is depicted here off the shores of Pitcairn Island, where she was later burned and sunk by Fletcher Christian and his crew. The mutineers hid out and settled there and today the Pitcairn Islanders are a group descended mostly from nine Bounty mutineers and a handful of Tahitian women.

A one of a kind, great companion piece and conversation starter for any Captain Cook painting by Charles.
